Section 4.1 Objectives

By the end of this module students will be able to:

  1. Describe the process of redistricting, different types of gerrymandering, and the social justice implications of gerrymandering.

  2. Calculate and interpret three measures of compactness.

  3. Describe the idea of partisan gerrymandering and compute and interpret it with different measures.

  4. Explain the idea of racial gerrymandering and the use of statistics for its potential detection.

  5. Explain outlier analysis in the context of comparing ensembles of possible district maps and apply in simple examples.

  6. (Optional) Create and evaluate a district map using appropriate technology, mathematical tools, and political understanding.
