Van Life

How might we change the perception of van life and show that it can be a valuable lifestyle?

For the past semester, I have been studying and researching the lives and the history of people who choose to live in vehicles. Why do they choose to live in vehicles, how is this a sustainable lifestyle, and what are the positives vs. negatives? I’ve been interested in “van life” for a few years now since I have a passion for nature and traveling. Being able to convert your van into a camper has always seemed like a good way to travel, minimalize your life/belongings, and even save money.

I interviewed many people that have lived this lifestyle, received feedback from my audience, and figured out the benefits and negatives of the lifestyle. The majority of my findings say that the benefits heavily outweigh the negatives. Some of these benefits include financial freedom, traveling freedom, meeting new people, adventuring to new places, minimizing your life, and not relying on material goods for your happiness. The challenges that come with this lifestyle also gives you the opportunity to better yourself, skills, and other aspects of life. For my final piece, I chose to illustrate some of the beautiful places you could travel while living van life in a poster series. The inspirations behind this series are Van Life Magazine, Michael Schwab’s Amtrak poster design style, and the WPA National Park posters.
