Growth Mindset in Fitness

Paige Olsen

How might we change one’s mindset from fixed (self-imposed physical limit) to growth (enhanced through training) in fitness?

A healthy lifestyle is an important part of your mental and physical well-being. Physical conditioning is a key component towards that objective. My research has indicated that 89% of the candidates interviewed were in agreement with the importance of exercise and physical activity, however only 33% of that group were achieving that goal. Even with this overwhelming response, the question that must be asked is why is there such a significant gap between desire and execution?

My research seeks to better understand the individual barriers and how to achieve sustained motivation. Through my research, I discovered that there are a wide range of barriers impacting people’s ability to develop an effective physical regimen. Each individual has their unique circumstance, but as a collective group, commonality was identified. To give a better understanding, these obstacles can be categorized by the following; intimidation, knowledge, self motivation, time management, and fatigue.

Through my target market analysis, I have found that a majority of responses in motivation focused on body image. Social media heavily emphasizes the physical side of fitness which leads many people to workout solely “to look good”. This reason may not be strong enough for one to stay consistent long term. Once a reason for doing something moves internal, one does not need anything else to motivate them.

Brkthru (breakthrough) is a brand I created to empower those to break through these barriers. The brand provides film and graphic design content to challenge and influence one’s thinking to shift their commitment towards a sustained fitness regimen.

Our Mission

To challenge one's internal mindset to find their intrinsic motivation for sustained fitness.

Our Story

We all have unspoken barriers to breakthrough.

My barrier was anxiety.

When I first stepped into the gym, I was scared. I didn’t know what I was doing and thought others were watching me. In reality, it was the opposite. I have learned that the fitness community is very welcoming and wants others to improve. Through working out, I have realized that there is much more to it than being physical. I started to change how I viewed working out and started training my mind. Over time, I’ve learned to push possibilities and expand boundaries. I began to not listen to that voice that would tell me, “You can’t do it.”

My barrier was lack of knowledge.

When I first started lifting, I would see other’s progress and it was intimidating. I wanted to learn more about working out, so I decided to take it upon myself and talk to others in the gym. I knew no one was going to do it for me, except me. It was the best decision I’ve made. Working out has boosted my confidence, mood, and makes me feel good about myself. I enjoy challenging myself and find it rewarding when I achieve my goals.

What will you push through to become a better you?
