My topic talks about the importance of Black representation in the media and how it affects one's self-love/self-esteem. I will be focusing on colorism in the media and how it affects the Black community. Colorism stems from Colonialism and it is the idea of prejudice against people who have a darker skin tone as well as giving better treatment to those who are of the same race but lighter skinned. Throughout history, the media and our immediate environment, has controlled our self-image, especially now since we are in the age of technology.
For my proposed solution, I’m created an organization called the Black Media Society which focuses on changing Black Media representation positively. One of the ways of doing that is organizing a panel where the members can have a conversation about the problems that Black people face in the media, especially colorism.
This year marks Black Media Society’s first annual BMS image panel where we question and discuss topics in the media that affect people of color. Every year, the panel will be highlighting one main topic that is in the media and this year’s panel will be focusing on colorism. The purpose of the event is to educate people about these topics and also allow people to share their own experience.
